Two Trophies deliver an early Christmas present for the Wicks family

9 December 2021

What’s in a name?

A lot when it’s Pamela, winner of Best Sparkling Wine at the prestigious 2021 Melbourne Royal Wine Awards.

Named in honour of Wicks Estate owners, Simon and Tim Wicks’ mum, the 2015 ‘Pamela’ Sparkling Chardonnay Pinot Noir received a Gold Medal score of 96 points, outshining its competition in both the Non-Vintage and Vintage categories to take out the award.

Made in the méthode traditionelle, or traditional method, with four years on less, its $30 price point represents exceptional value given the labour-intensive process. Judges commented on the wines characteristics being “complex aged yeast, cork age character complex. Super fine palate, detailed, creamy, fine and long”.

The award for excellence was a first at the Show as it was the first time organisers named the award the Dr Tony Jordan Trophy, in honour of Dr Tony Jordan OAM whose contribution to the wine industry is legendary.

Another first is the 2021 vintage at Wicks Estate for Chief Winemaker Adam Carnaby. He is already proving his expertise, last week receiving the Trophy for Best Rosé at the 2021 Adelaide Hills Wine Show with the Wicks Estate 2021 Pinot Rosé.

Made from Pinot Noir grapes, it is blush in colour and beautifully elegant with pure and vibrant Pinot characteristics. The palate is just dry enough with juicy ripe strawberry notes. Judges described the wine as “summer in a glass” and “pale, lean, fragrant and delicious”.

The Wicks Family owned and operated wine company, situated in the cool climate wine region of the Adelaide Hills, produce hand-crafted wines from its state-of-the-art winery at Woodside.

The winemaking process is carefully controlled from vineyard to winery, overseen by Adam who has humbly lauded the 2021 vintage conditions for the outstanding result.

“I was very fortunate to have excellent vintage conditions in 2021. The growing and ripening period was ideal and I had high-quality Adelaide Hills pinot fruit to work with that had excellent fruit flavours and perfectly balanced acidity.”

Wicks Estate Director Simon Wicks said he is delighted with the performance of Wick Estate wines in recent wine shows.

“You always want to win at the local show [The Adelaide Hills Wine Show] as you’re up against your friends in the Hills but to win with Pamela at such a prominent Australian Wine show against wines from Tasmania, Yarra Valley as well as the outstanding local producers is a huge win for the family.” Simon said.

Wicks Estate Pamela Sparkling Chardonnay Pinot Noir has a recommended retail price of $30.

Wicks Estate Rosé 2021 has a recommended retail price of $20.
